Foreword

These days, everyone is trying to drive a revolution against older browsers and toward new technologies. Although embracing new methods is a good and commendable thing to do, many developers simply need to support older browsers or cut corners to meet their deadlines and the expectations of their managers. Particularly in high-traffic environments, compromises have to be made.

From this perspective, this book is a breath of fresh air. Rather than scolding you for doing what your business needs to be done, Antony and Inayaili attempt to explain how best to make these compromises and which battles to choose. Writing CSS is about more than just the code—to be a great developer, you need to understand what's going on under the hood, the way different browsers process and render websites, the different environments you might be in, performance, accessibility, semantics, usability...

Too often, in large businesses, the developers put their convenience first and the user second. This book advises you against that and helps you deliver something you and your business can be proud of, without going too far in either direction. It's CSS for the real world.
