About the Author

Robert Buttrick is an international authority on business-led strategic programme and project management. He has a successful track record for building strategic project management centres of excellence in a wide variety of blue-chip companies, most recently as BT’s PPM Method Director. Prior to that, he was accountable for creating and running a project-based framework for managing change for a global communication company, enabling the planning and development of new systems, products, services, and capabilities to meet ever growing customer needs. He was also a member of the management team responsible for managing the company’s UK residential sector, acting as coach to sponsors and project managers, in a wide range of business projects.

Before taking up a corporate career in 1993, Robert worked for PA Consulting, a management and technology consultancy where he specialized in business-led project management. Clients included Lloyds TSB Bank, National Rivers Authority, Property Services Agency, Avon Industrial Polymers, NatWest Bank, and RHM.

Robert’s early career was as a civil engineer. After graduating from the University of Liverpool with a first class honours engineering degree, he joined Gibb Ltd, who provided engineering consulting, design, and management services for infrastructure projects worldwide. He has lived in countries as diverse as Kenya, Mauritius, Yemen, Senegal, and Sudan, working on the evaluation, design and supervision of a number of marine and water resource projects. He has also worked with the World Bank in Washington DC on investment appraisals for major development projects.

Robert is an active contributor to programme and project management practice through his writing and at conferences. He a UK Principal Expert working on the development of national and international project management standards, for which he received a Distinguished Service Certificate from BSI. He was an author of the 2017 edition of PRINCE® and the lead developer for the UK government’s project delivery standard. He is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, a Chartered Engineer and an Honorary Fellow of the Association for Project Management.

Robert is currently an independent author, a consultant and a Visiting Teaching Fellow at the Warwick Manufacturing Group at the University of Warwick.
