Conclusion

Value investing is a lifelong journey. Value investing is not a get-rich-quick scheme.

We like to think of value investing as more of a get-rich-slowly (but surely) philosophy. It is a topic that we have spent over a decade understanding and practising, and will probably spend the rest of our lives mastering. This might explain why value investing is not for everyone, but rather for those with great patience and a thirst for knowledge. As Benjamin Franklin said, “Take time for all things: great haste makes great waste.”

Up to this point, you might have the impression that value investing is just about the money. This is not a feel-good book that tells you monetary returns are not the focus of investing. They are!

We personally know of many investors that have practised the concept of value investing and have obtained financial freedom in their lifetime. We really hope the material shared in this book would help you move closer towards your own financial goals.

However, value investing has brought us more than just financial benefits. It might be a cliché, but our journey down this path of value investing has taught us to be better people. Among many other things, value investing has taught us the value of patience, the benefits of doing your homework, the importance of learning from your experience and understanding people – if you listen attentively, the opportunity might just be lying right at your feet. To us, we treat our investment journeys like a game – but with money involved, we treat it as a serious game, one that we enjoy. Why else would we spend our Friday nights reading annual reports?

If the book has been beneficial to you, we hope that you will share the idea of value investing and this book with the people around you. Value investing is not a zero-sum game. The more people who understand the concept of value investing, the easier it would be for the market to recognise the value in the market. In that way, the market would reward us for spotting these valuable companies, benefiting all investors.

Over the course of our book, we looked at the major trends in Asia. We discovered what makes the Asian market unique, and how we should adapt to it. We pieced together the jigsaw behind annual reports and saw how all the seemingly unrelated pieces came together to tell us a story. We have shared the wisdom of some of the greatest value investors in Asia with you. We have explored the three key methods of finding value in the market – through asset value, current earning value and growth potential. What's more, to show that we are not kidding you, our book also contains many real-life current and historical case studies that will help you better navigate these waters.

It is now up to you to experiment with the different styles of investing as described in the book. Take some time to figure out which style of investing suits you best. You can start by forming a circle of competence of the markets and industries that you are most comfortable investing in, and branch out from there. Go out there, do not be afraid to share your ideas with like-minded investors. Personally, we have found sharing ideas with like-minded investors to be one of the best steps a value investor can take.

And finally, you need to have the courage of your knowledge and experience. If you have formed an opinion from the facts and if you know that your judgement is sound, act on it – even though others may hesitate or differ. You are neither right nor wrong because the crowd disagrees with you. You are right because your data and reasoning are right.
