Summary

A search of the /usr/bin directory shows that there are more than 500 UNIX commands in that directory alone. Trying to remember every UNIX command and its function is beyond the ability of most people. Learning how to search for a command to perform a particular system function, however, is important and can save you a great deal of time and can improve your efficiency. Many system administrators have spent days writing elaborate programs to perform a particular task, only to find out that there already was a UNIX command written to perform that task.

Now you’re equipped to create directories and navigate the Solaris directory tree. You also should now have an understanding of the various commands used to list, examine, and manage files. These commands are all valuable tools that the system administrator must know, understand, and be proficient in. For more advanced topics in file management, see Chapter 4.

In the next chapter, I’ll describe how to create and edit files using the vi editor and sed (the stream editor).
