Examine your xinetd.d directory. Are telnetd and ftpd enabled? If so, is TCP wrappers (tcpd) configured for them?

Enable TCP wrappers and place ALL:ALL in /etc/hosts.deny, then attempt a Telnet session. Is the inbound request ignored as expected?

Familiarize yourself with /etc/sendmail.cf and /etc/aliases. Run newaliases.
