Throughout these chapters, you have seen how Publisher offers a Custom option where you can create your own custom colors, for example. Custom color schemes are another feature where you can create your own customized set of color combinations.

The options for other aspects of Publisher are in the Publisher Options dialog box. You can open this at any time from the Backstage area.

Setting the General Options

The General options are for the certain aspects of the Publisher interface. You can elect to turn off the little pop-up Mini Toolbar that appears when you select text. (Although, I don’t know why you would.) You can also opt to turn off the Live Preview option—perhaps because you have an older computer and it slows things down.

Miscellaneous items such as the username and initials used are here, along with fun stuff such as selecting an Office Background and Theme.

One item to notice is in the Start-up options section. If you prefer to start at the workspace rather than the New page, disable the check box.

Setting the Proofing Options

The Proofing options enable you to customize AutoCorrect and Publisher’s Spelling tool so that they both work exactly the way you want them to. AutoCorrect is particularly important because it makes corrections for you automatically. If you would rather it not do something, you can turn it off.

Clicking the AutoCorrect Options button opens up the AutoCorrect dialog box where you can customize the AutoCorrect features. One of the items to pay attention to is the list of automatic replacements. If you type outlines, every time you type “(C)”, AutoCorrect replaces it with the copyright symbol (©). Removing this item from the list stops that replacement.

Clicking the Custom Dictionaries button opens the Custom Dictionaries dialog box where you can edit the main dictionary word list and add custom dictionaries so that they are used in addition to the main dictionary.

Setting the Save Options

The Save options enables you to customize how publications are saved in Publisher. The first option you see is the AutoRecover save interval. If you’ve never seen a message about recovered files, you’ve never known the magic of AutoRecover. Publisher automatically saves each open publication at a certain interval. If Publisher closes incorrectly and you are worried about losing your work, AutoRecover will have saved everything up to the save interval.

If you often forget to save your work, you should definitely decrease the interval so that Publisher saves for you, more often.

Setting the Language Options

The Publisher Language preferences are set in the Language Options page of the Publisher Options dialog box. Here, you can set the languages that you want to use when spell checking, grammar checking, and sorting. You can also set the language to use for the buttons, tab, and help topics in Publisher.

Setting the Advanced Options

The Advanced Options page has a long set of “advanced” editing options. They aren’t actually advanced, but you can find a nice collection of items that can be enabled/disabled. Be sure to scroll down so that you can see all the available sections.

Customizing the Ribbon

You may have gathered from the name that this set of options customizes the Ribbon. And you would be right! The idea here is to move items from the left pane to the right pane to add them to the Ribbon. Moving them from the right pane to the left pane removes them from the Ribbon. Simply select a command; then click Add or Remove. Open the Choose commands from list to select another source from which to select commands.

Customizing the Quick Access Toolbar

Last, but not least, the Quick Access Toolbar page uses the same method as for the Ribbon. You can add and remove buttons to put the commands that you use the most at your fingertips.
