HERO'S JOURNEY WHEEL FOR MAMMA SÖRMAN-NILSSON

Return with the elixir

This is the final stage and it's the ultimate step in the heroine's journey, where she returns back to her ordinary world a changed wo/man. She will have grown as a person, learned many things, faced incredible danger, and potentially even had a close encounter with death, but at this juncture she looks forward to the start of a new life — a renaissance. Her return to the ordinary world may bring hope to those in similar circumstances or to those left behind, or she may return with a direct solution to their problems and even a fresh perspective for everyone to consider. The reward she obtains may be both literal and metaphoric — and potentially a cause for celebration, self-realisation or a peaceful end to strife.

Whatever is on the heroine's life menu, it symbolises three things: change, success and proof of her journey. Her return home also signals the need for resolution for the story's other key players. Her doubters will be ostracised, her enemies will be punished and allies rewarded. Ultimately, the heroine returns to where she started, but things will never be the same again, as she is fundamentally transformed as a character.

Here's how Luke's return looked in Star Wars:

Inner journey: Return with the elixir — the main weapon of the Evil Empire is destroyed.
Outer journey: Final mastery of the problem — the team members are honoured as heroes and peace (temporarily) settles over the galaxy.

For Birgitta, the journey continues:

Inner journey: Return with the elixir — it remains to be seen whether this book might be the elixir needed to progress Mum's hero's journey, with little evidence that she has fully accepted the elixir that could solve her business problems.
Outer journey: Final mastery of the problem — because the internal journey has not progressed like we had hoped, the hero has not yet been able to gain final mastery of the problem, and as such has not been able to get the results we all so desperately want for Mum (and Dad, of course)
