neural network or parallel-distributed processing structured, customer-driven one. But even in
such a new industry structure organizations do not change. It is similar to soccer. Team players
do not change. What is expected from each player is what changes—they need to have versatile
capabilities to respond to such expectations.
But in the case of the Connected Society, team organization changes from time to time
in response to the changing needs. Sometimes, we need a group of products to work together to
meet our immediate expectations, but other times we need another group, which members are
largely different to do some other jobs.
14.3 ADAPTIVE ORGANIZATION
Getting straight to the point, the Connected Society will call for adaptive team organization.
ere is a great deal of research on team organization, but most of it discusses how we can
organize a team to achieve a goal. However, situations today change continuously so that goals,
i.e., what action we should take, changes from minute to minute.
It is not too much to say that there is no, or very few, if ever, research which deals with
such a problem of how we can manage adaptive organization. When we say organization, it
usually means a fixed number of members. But in the Connected Society, the number of team
members and their goals vary from moment to moment.
Industrie 4.0, a German project, is often discussed together with IoT. But from the stand-
point of team organization, they are completely different. Industrie 4.0 is based on current Small
and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), i.e., the team members are fixed. In fact, the goal of Indus-
trie 4.0 is to increase global competitiveness of SMEs. us, the goal is fixed, and the team
members are also fixed. But in the case of the Connected Society, which IoT brought forth, the
number of team members and their organization change constantly.
14.4 PROGRESS TO EVOLUTION
In other words, our world yesterday was based on PROGRESS. We stay on the same track and we
learn how to go further ahead. But the world which the Connected Society is bringing forth is
the world of
EVOLUTION.
Our engineering has been focusing on progress, but the Connected
Society will change it to be evolution-focused.
14.5 TEAM FOR PROGRESS AND TEAM FOR EVOLUTION
As discussed earlier, brain scientists are now introducing a new concept of Selfishness. eir
new definition is how we can establish a win-win relation with others. is is another evolution.
In fact, because our brain is selfish in this sense, we could survive and keep our species through
the changing environments and situations.
We must take note, however, that the core members may be the same, but the whole
organization changes to adapt. at is why we have so many different kinds of living things.
