Research and print out several mission statements. Be sure to choose statements from both not-for-profit organizations and for-profit organizations. Bring these mission statements to class.
Step 1. Assemble into groups of four or five.
Step 2. As a group, evaluate the similar components in each mission statement, such as the following:
The statement of the product or service being offered
The primary market it’s being offered to
An indication of the organization’s commitment to quality
An indication of the organization’s commitment to social responsibility
A declaration of organization’s philosophy
Step 3. Make note of the components that are included in most mission statements and those that are included in only a few of them.
Step 4. As a group, decide which mission statement is the most inspiring. Why? Which is the least inspiring? Why?
Step 5. As a class, compare the statements deemed most inspiring from each group and determine which is the most effective. Finally, openly discuss with your classmates how the winning statement would affect their inclination to work for this organization.
