Problems

  1. A hospital has established a goal to improve hospital stay conditions and is accepting input from various stakeholders on their ideal vision of “What is a good hospital stay?”
    1. Adopt a perspective, for example, a patient, a clinician, an administrator, and refine the question to one that can be answered using data.
    2. Identify variables that can be collected to address the research question. For each variable state its measurement level and JMP modeling type.
  2. Search the Internet for data sources on mortality from firearms. Discuss potential biases that may be present from each data source. Which data source would you recommend using and why?
  3. Develop a research question on a topic of your choice.
    1. Find a data source that has an accompanying codebook.
    2. Identify the data elements that correspond to the response and predictors of your research question.
    3. Critically evaluate the codebook and any other associated documents. Are the data definitions clear and complete? Is there sufficient background information to understand the data’s pedigree?
    4. Conduct a basic descriptive analysis of your chosen variables using both visualizations and descriptive statistics.
  4. Create a JMP data table that has one column named “Zip Code.” Enter the zip code 02135 (Boston, MA).
    1. What is the correct measurement level for a zip code?
    2. Change the JMP data and modeling types and notice the effect. What are the correct JMP data and modeling types for a zip code?
    3. What are the consequences of using an incorrect data or modeling type in a statistical analysis or when visualizing data?
  5. Search the print and digital media to find examples of effective and ineffective data presentation. For each example identify the following.
    1. Who is the intended audience?
    2. What about the data presentation effectively communicates to the audience?
    3. What about the data presentation could be improved?
