Open the file ADK_Newborns_2014.jmp and select Rows > Data Filter. Add the column Facility Name and from the resulting dialog highlight Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital as shown in Figure 12.1 Data Filter to Select Subset.

All records corresponding to the Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital will be selected in the JMP data table. To create a new data table containing only these records select Tables > Subset and from the resulting dialog choose the radio button for Selected Rows. The new data table is renamed to CVPH_Newborns_2014.jmp using File > Save as. The file is now ready for analysis.

In SPARCS, birthweight is recorded in grams. This scale of measurement is not commonly used by the general public to describe birthweight. To facilitate comprehension of the variation in birthweight we will create a column that expresses birthweight in pounds. Create a new column, right click over the column heading and select Formula.
