SECTION V
No Excuses

AN IMPROVISED EXPLOSIVE device (IED) can be detonated in a variety of ways. This IED was “command detonated.” A wire connected it to a device held by an insurgent hiding down the street in a building. He waited and watched as Sam got closer and closer to it: three 105 mm anti-aircraft rounds bound together and buried in the road. Each round was 3 feet long and weighed over 30 pounds. It was packed with nails, screws, and other deadly bits of metal and glass to serve as shrapnel. As Sam approached, the insurgent pressed the button on the device, and Sam’s life changed forever.
