BY THOMAS A. MARINO

Artist, Photographer

Massachusetts, USA

While his focus is currently on altered iPhone photography, Thomas Marino’s background is that of conceptual artist, whose work includes installation art, altered handmade objects, photographs, and paintings.

While most photographers seek focus and clarity, this artist finds his niche using various apps to “take down” his photographs, seeking a new truth.

The photo Still-life (opposite) was shot with the app “Camera Genius” then opened in the app “Lo-Mob”, where it was given a blue tone. In the app “FotoMuse” the image was framed in a distressed fashion, to further deconstruct the original image.

The woman’s profile was shot with the iPhone app “Camera Genius”. That image is opened in the app “HiCon Pro” to increase the contrast, then opened in the app “ezimba” to soften the image in a painterly way. Finally, the image is opened in the app “FotoMuse” to frame the image.

For the New York Times, image, multiple photos of the newspaper were shot using the app “Camera Genius” and opened in the app “Montage”, creating the composition at right. Then the image was altered using the app “ Lo-Mob”, giving it a distressed look. Finally, the image is opened in the app “Photo Finish” to give the piece a frame reminiscent of spilled ink.

This image was shot with the app ”Camera Genius” and desaturated of all color. Then the image was opened in the app “Lo-Mob” and the 30s Contact 2 look applied to the image to create the feeling of a contact print from an old glass negative (remember negatives?). Finally the image was altered one last time in the app “Light Leak”.

The photo was taken using the app “Camera Genius”, opened and filtered in the app ”Impression”, then altered further in the app “Abstractions”. The final stage is to frame the piece in the app “FotoMuse”.

The portrait of the woman was shot with the iPhone app “Camera Genius”. The image is opened in the app “ezimba” to give the image a painterly effect, then opened in “Photo Finish” to create a rough texture that creates the visual illusion of 3D paint peeling off an old wall.
