Setting the Preview Preferences for PDFs

The way you set the preferences for Preview affects how you use the application. I’m a big advocate for making Mountain Lion and all its applications work the way you want them to. It’s very important that your application preferences fit your work style.

The Preview preferences are divided into five categories: General, Images, PDF, Bookmarks, and Signatures. However, the only three covered in this chapter are PDF, Bookmarks, and Signatures (the other two are discussed in Chapter 12). Open Preview, and then press maccmd+, to open the Preferences window.

PDF

The options under the PDF tab in the Preview preferences are shown in Figure 7.5.

Bookmarks

Preview allows you to bookmark images and PDFs so that you can zip right to them when needed. This is very much like using bookmarks in a web browser. To add a bookmark, open the file you want and press maccmd+D, or choose Bookmarks→Add Bookmark from the menu.

The Bookmarks tab lists all the bookmarks you create. You can delete bookmarks from the list by choosing Bookmarks→Edit Bookmarks, selecting the bookmark to be deleted, and clicking Remove.

Signatures

How cool would it be if you could add your own John Hancock to your PDF files? You’re about to find out, because that is exactly what Preview lets you do with one of its latest options.

To add a signature to your arsenal of PDF tricks, follow these steps:

1. Open the Signatures pane of the Preview preferences window and click Create Signature.

2. Sign your name (in black ink) on a white piece of paper.

3. Hold the paper up to your Mac’s camera. Be sure that the signature on the paper is resting on the blue line in the preview window, as shown in Figure 7.6.

4. Click Accept and your signature is added to the list in the Signatures preferences pane.

You can add or remove signatures from the list by using the plus (+) and minus (–) signs in the lower-left corner of the Signatures preferences pane. Read on to find out how to insert signatures into your PDFs.
