The Device Manager

The Device Manager is your link to all things hardware. As shown in Figure 16-7, it lists every component of your PC, and lets you install, uninstall, update, or troubleshoot your device drivers.

To open Device Manager, right-click My Computer and select Manage from the shortcut menu. Double click Device Manager in the left pane to open the device "tree" in the right pane (Figure 16-7). Click a plus sign to see the actual model names for these components that are installed in your PC.

Tip

Device Manager lists most of your PC's components, but not all; it may hide non-Plug-and-Play devices, among others. On rare occasions, you may need to see these devices to troubleshoot a problem.

To view hidden devices in Device Manager, choose ViewShow Hidden Devices. Repeat the selection to hide them again.

Printing a Device Report

Device Manager can print reports about your system, including a system summary and reports about a particular device or class of device—if you're familiar with IRQs and other resources (see page 344), such a list can be a useful troubleshooting tool. To produce a report, follow these steps:

  1. Open Device Manager.

For a report on a particular device or class of devices, highlight the device in the right pane.

  2. Choose View Print.

    The Print dialog box appears.

  3. Select the type of report you want, then click Print.
