Fonts

To see the list of fonts installed on your computer, double-click the Fonts icon in the Control Panel. The Fonts folder isn't like any ordinary folder; in the View menu, you see a new option called List Fonts by Similarity (Figure 8-13).

Left: When you click List Fonts by Similarity, a drop-down list appears below the toolbars. Select a font in the drop-down list to make the other fonts line up in order of their degree of similarity. Right: To see a preview of a font, double-click its icon.

If your font list is very long and unwieldy, choose ViewHide Variations to hide font variations, such as italic and bold, making the list easier to look through.

In addition to the fonts that come with Windows 2000, there are thousands of others, from the sublime to the absurd, which you can buy from type companies or download for free from the Web. Windows TrueType font files (the most common font format) have a .ttf extension. You install new fonts like this:

  1. Open the Fonts control panel.

Do this by selecting SettingsControl Panel and double-clicking the Fonts icon.

  2. Choose File Install New Font.

The Add Fonts dialog box appears.

  3. Use the Folders and Drives selectors to browse to the folder where your new TrueType font files reside.

In the List of Fonts box, you'll see a list of all of the fonts the applet finds in the selected folder.

  4. Select the fonts you want to install.

You can highlight the individual fonts you want to install, or just click the Select All button.

  5. Turn on "Copy fonts to Fonts folder."

If you don't do this, your PC will access the font files from their current location, in whatever folder they're in. If, weeks later, you inadvertently delete them or their folder, the fonts will disappear from your Font menus and dialog boxes. Copying them to your Fonts folder makes it much less likely that you'll lose your fonts in this way.

  6. Click OK.

Once the fonts are installed, you can use them in any application, just as you can the standard Windows 2000 set.
