Due to the complexity of the topics discussed, some figures in this book are very detailed and are intended only to provide a high-level view of concepts. Those figures are representational and not intended to be read in detail.

In the first hours of this book, you took a quick look at SharePoint Designer (SPD) 2010. You also saw how you can use SPD for Business Connectivity Services (BCS) and for creating workflows. During this hour, you dive into SPD 2010. After this hour you will have a clear understanding of what SPD is and how integral it is for SharePoint development.

SPD is a web and application design program that can be used to create custom no-code solutions for SharePoint 2010. SPD can be used to create sites ranging from small management sites to complex portal solutions. SPD is a single environment through which you can create a SharePoint site, customize individual components, design business processes, and deploy the site, all with zero coding effort. Because you have a single environment for all the tasks, you can spend more time on site customization rather than searching for various components for each task. In the following section you learn about the different user interface sections that make up the SPD 2010.
