Importance-Difficulty Matrix

A charting mechanism for teams to reach consensus on design priorities and feature decisions according to value propositions

  • The first step in building the matrix is to agree upon the importance of each idea or thematic cluster, arguing for placement on a horizontal spectrum from least to most important.
  • When the elements are laid out on this x-axis, a vertical y-axis is added from least to most difficult. Difficulty here can refer to cost or any other challenge associated with implementation.
  • Without changing where ideas have been placed on the horizontal importance dimension, each idea is moved up vertically according to agreed-upon difficulty.
  • A four-quadrant grid is superimposed over the plot. Items in the lower left corner are low priority features.

Items in the lower right quadrant are high value propositions. Items in the upper left are luxury decisions. Items in the upper right quadrant are reserved for strategic advantage.

Typically it is easier to place issues on the importance (x) axis first, then place them on the difficulty (y) axis. Highest return on investment issues will be in the lower right.
