Adding or Removing Windows 2000 Components

You're not obligated to live with the software the Windows 2000 Pro installer dumps onto your hard drive. In fact, many megabytes of it may be accessories that you never use. On the other hand, the Windows 2000 default installation doesn't include a number of software morsels that you may decide you'd like to try out. Fortunately, it's easy to add or remove these optional components without disturbing the rest of your Windows 2000 installation:

  1. Choose Start → Control Panel. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.

    The Add/Remove Programs applet opens.

  2. Click Add/Remove Windows Components at the left side of the dialog box.

    Now the Windows Components Wizard appears.

  3. Click Next.

    You've arrived at the master list of optional Windows 2000 components, as shown in Figure A-3.

    To find out what something is, click its name once. And if the Details button appears, you've clicked something that contains several other somethings. Click Details to see a list of the software modules within this category.

  4. Turn on a checkbox to request the installation of that component; turn off a checkbox to have the corresponding software removed from your system. Then click Done.

    You may be asked to insert the Windows 2000 CD-ROM as your computer completes the transaction.
