What to Do If Setup Fails

What do you do if Setup hangs, shuts off your computer, or displays a STOP error (the infamous Blue Screen Of Death)? Here are a few suggestions:

  • Try again. Sometimes Setup is smart enough to avoid whatever it was that caused the problem in the first place.

  • Update your BIOS, or disable ACPI. As noted earlier, ACPI is Windows's advanced power-saving technology. To turn it off, at the beginning of text-mode setup, ignore the prompt to press F6 to install third-party storage drivers; press F5 instead, and then select Standard PC from the list that appears.

  • Try one of the Windows 2000 Help System's Troubleshooters. The Windows 2000 Help menu has some useful suggestions in its System Setup Troubleshooter. (At the desktop, press F1; in the Help window, click Contents; click Troubleshooting and Maintenance; click "Windows 2000 troubleshooters.") On the other hand, this tip is no help if you don't have access to an operating Windows 2000 machine.

  • Check the Knowledge Base. The definitive source for troubleshooting any Microsoft product is the Knowledge Base at http://search.support.microsoft.com (although once again, you'll need some functioning computer to get online).
