Scanners and Cameras

Most scanners and cameras come with their own software, which may add icons to this folder in the Control Panel. This folder also houses an icon for the Scanners and Cameras wizard, which you need to install the software for a new scanner or camera only if the mere act of plugging a scanner or camera into a port on a computer doesn't make Windows 2000 recognize and configure it.

To open the Scanner and Camera Installation Wizard, double-click its icon and then click the Add button. Select the manufacturer and model of the device you want to install. If you have a floppy disk or CD that came with the device, click the Have Disk button.

Next, you're asked what port you want to use. If you know which port the camera or scanner is plugged into, select it. If you don't, leave Automatic Port Select highlighted and click Next. Accept the device name (or change it) and click Next again.

Windows 2000 now copies the necessary files and completes the installation. (See Chapter 16 for more on installing add-ons to your PC.)
