What Are Recommendations?

LinkedIn recommendations are testimonials. They provide third-party verification of the information in your LinkedIn profile. You can ask any of your first-degree connections on LinkedIn to write a recommendation for you. Each recommendation is linked to a specific job you’ve held as listed in your LinkedIn profile. It’s a good idea to try to get recommendations for all of your past jobs with particular focus on jobs that demonstrate you have skills and experience related to the type of work you want to do in the future.

LinkedIn members can recommend any of their connections at any time. Alternatively, LinkedIn offers a simple form that enables members to request recommendations from their connections. Don’t wait around for recommendations. Instead, use that form and request recommendations as discussed in the “Requesting Recommendations” section later in this chapter.

Recommendations that you receive are displayed in your LinkedIn profile in the Experience and Recommendations sections. Recommendations that you write for your connections appear in the Experience and Recommendations sections of their profiles as well as on the right side of your own profile in the [Your Name Here] Recommends box as shown in Figure 8.1.

QUICK TIP
Recommendations that you receive will not display on your LinkedIn profile until you accept them as described in the next section.

Figure 8.1: Recommendations you write for other people display on the right side of your LinkedIn profile.
