Durability

A transaction is durable if, after it's committed, the changes to the storage systems are persistent, irrespective of hardware reboots. So, if the storage system maintained data in memory, this guarantee would not be met, since on restart the storage system would lose the data. Durability generally also involves keeping a transaction log so that even in the case of disk failures, the logs could be replayed to bring the system to a consistent state.
