How to do it...

Use the following steps to generate the XML sitemap for your WordPress site:

  1. Log in to Dashboard as an administrator.
  2. Click the XML-Sitemap sub-menu item under the Settings menu to get a screen similar to the following:

  1. Keep the default settings in the Basic Options section.
  2. Go to the Additional Pages section.
  3. If you have any URLs generated outside the WordPress core features, add them by providing the URL, Priority, Change Frequency, and Last Update settings. These might be URLs generated from plugins such as BuddyPress or custom URLs you set up using the WordPress rewrite rules.
  4. Go to the Sitemap Content section to get a screen similar to the following:

  1. Select categories, archives, author pages, and tag pages. If you are using custom post types and custom taxonomies, you can select them as well.
  2. Go to the Excluded Items section.
  3. Select any categories or posts to be excluded from the sitemap.
  4. Click the Update Options button to save the settings.
  1. Visit http://www.yoursite.com/sitemap.xml to see the generated sitemap for the site, as shown in the following screenshot. Replace www.yoursite.com with the URL of your site:

Now the sitemap is available on your site, and the search engines will use it to index the URLs.
