In Chapter 9, we discussed the three types of data models provided by PowerDesigner, the Conceptual Data Model, the Logical Data Model, and the Physical Data Model.
Nobody can force you to use these models in the way Sybase intended, but there is an obvious synergy between our three levels of data models and the PowerDesigner models, shown below. To avoid confusion, we refer to the PowerDesigner models by their 3-letter model types, CDM, LDM, and PDM.
| Relational | PowerDesigner Model Type | Dimensional | PowerDesigner Model Type |
SAM | ‘One-pager’ on how something works | CDM | ‘One-pager’ on what is monitored | CDM |
LDM | Detailed business solution on how something works | LDM or CDM * | Detailed business solution on what is monitored | LDM |
PDM | Detailed technical solution on how something works | PDM | Detailed technical solution on what is monitored | PDM |
* PowerDesigner cannot currently generate XML Models from LDMs, but you can generate XML Models from CDMs, so you might want to consider using the CDM to create a Logical Data Model to manage XML Schemas. You can also consider using a PDM or an Object-oriented class model for this task.
