Data Modeling in PowerDesigner

Section III explains the important role of data modeling tools, the key features required of any data modeling tool, and an introduction to the essential features of PowerDesigner. It also describes how to create and manage data modeling objects in PowerDesigner. By the time you finish this section, you will be able to create data models in PowerDesigner.

Chapter 8 explains why there is a need to model using a software tool instead of pencil and paper or drawing tools, and describes the key features required of a data modeling tool.

Chapter 9 provides a brief introduction to the features of PowerDesigner for data modelers, including a brief overview of the tool’s features especially Linking and Syncing models.

Chapter 10 introduces you to the essential components and features of PowerDesigner for data modeling and general model management. After you have read this chapter, followed us in the ‘Your Turn’ sections, and finished the Exercise, you’ll be ready to do some real work in PowerDesigner. If you only use PowerDesigner occasionally, or need to refresh your knowledge, come back to this chapter and work through it again.

Chapter 11 builds on the knowledge gained in Chapter 10, and shows you how to create and manage entities in PowerDesigner. It also expands on your knowledge of the properties of objects.

Chapter 12 describes the support provided for data elements by PowerDesigner Domains, Data Items, Attributes, and Columns. It outlines a simple strategy for how and when to use each of the types of data elements in PowerDesigner, and introduces you to the PowerDesigner Glossary. More essential PowerDesigner features are introduced - dependency matrices, shortcuts and replicas, and generation links.

Chapter 13 shows you how to create and manage the different types of relationship introduced in Chapter 5, and discusses differences between the CDM and LDM in their support for relationships. The concept of graphical synonyms is discussed in more detail, and we show you how to route your relationships.

Chapter 14 shows you how to create and manage the different types of keys introduced in Chapter 7, and discusses differences between the CDM, LDM, and PDM in their support for keys.
