SECTION I

Data Modeling Introduction

shipflat300.tif

Section I introduces data modeling along with its purpose and variations. At the completion of this section, the reader will be able to justify the need for a data model and know which type of model is most effective for each situation. The reader will also be able to perform a very high-level assessment of a data model by identifying certain characteristics of the data model and then determining how well these characteristics and the specific purpose of the model are aligned.

Chapter 1 introduces the data model and explains this powerful tool using two examples, both of which are used throughout the text. I love desserts and sweets, so one example will model ice cream (yes, ice cream!). The other example is modeling business cards. Both ice cream and business cards will illustrate modeling techniques so that the reader can appreciate the process of building a data model from requirements through to design.

Chapter 2 explains the two core characteristics of a data model that make it so valuable: communication and precision. You will learn where communication occurs and about the three situations that can weaken data model precision. This chapter then explores the areas within the business and application where the data model can be used.
