This chapter addresses the following questions:

  • What makes an experience with a product successful?
  • What are the characteristics of great experience, and how do these characteristics maximize a product's desirability, engagement, conversion, retention, and reputation?

We will explore several dimensions, including localization, customization, and personalization, of the process that tailors an experience to a single user. We will look at how this outcome is achieved by creating engagement and infusing a sense of joy, marvel, and fun through visual effects, animation, gamification, and data visualization. While new technologies continuously expand the spectrum of possible product experiences, each design discipline has its proven methods for creating compelling engagement experiences, which are often technology agnostic.

This chapter includes an assortment of examples and instances that demonstrate what makes an experience with a product pleasing, and why. It will be like learning how to pull a rabbit out of a hat. Not that design is magic, but that it can feel like magic to those experiencing it.
