Chapter 1. Introducing SharePoint 2010

It is rare for a technology product to attract as much attention as SharePoint has in recent years. True, every technology has its fan base, but SharePoint has attracted a massive following over the years. A huge percentage of all organizations today, of every shape and size, use some form of SharePoint within their organization.

This is no fluke. SharePoint is popular because of its capability to provide a platform for the creation of flexible, powerful, and intelligent business solutions. It provides for comprehensive document and records management, team collaboration, web content management, and extranet capabilities, all from an easy-to-understand and customizable interface.

Microsoft has further upped the ante with this latest release of SharePoint products and technologies, collectively referred to as SharePoint 2010. New features are included, such as a more scalable service application model, enhanced user interface (UI) with ribbon support, external data integration with Business Data Connectivity Services, and many more. Microsoft has listened to customer feedback and improved the platform significantly, providing for an intelligent platform that can grow with all types of organizations.

This chapter introduces the SharePoint 2010 products, giving a high-level overview of the features and functions in the platform. It lists the changes and features in SharePoint 2010 and serves as a jumping-off point to the other chapters in this book, indicating which particular areas of the book give more information about individual features and technologies.
