Summary

This chapter took on the challenging task of covering the tools that site collection administrators and site administrators will need to be comfortable with if they are to effectively plan, design, build, and support site collections. The process of creating a site collection was reviewed briefly, and recommendations were given on how the administrator can review the scope of the site collection to thoroughly understand the scope of the administrative challenge. One of these challenges involves controlling who can create sites within the site collection. Then the process of creating pages and sites was discussed and demonstrated, and a full list of the page and site template options in the full range of SharePoint 2010 product was provided, which included notes on the functionality and distinguishing features of each item. The wide range of tools available on the Site Settings page was reviewed, but because of the sheer number of items, in many cases only high-level descriptions were given. Site Variations were looked at in more detail and ideas provided on how they can be used and even “hacked” for other business purposes. The range of site features and site collection features were covered, and finally the process of audience targeting was explained and demonstrated to round out the chapter. This final step-by-step example gives the reader a chance to work with configuring a page by adding web parts and then configuring the web part to use audience targeting.
