Reviewing the Site Actions Tools

The Site Actions section of the Site Settings page provides a set of tools that allow the administrator to enable site features, reset to a site definition, delete the site, or view reports about activity on the site. If the site is a nonpublishing site, the administrator will be able to save the site as a template and include content, assuming it is less than 50MB of data.

Site features are reviewed in more detail later in this section, but enable the site collection administrator to control which toolsets are available to site collection and site users.

The reports can be very useful for a site collection administrator to see the number of users visiting a specific site and the top pages visited on that site and who the top visitors are, while the site collection reports add information on overall activities for the site collection as well as for search activity. Viewing search activity can be very useful for site collection administrators because if certain terms keep appearing in search terms, they should probably be incorporated into the taxonomy for the organization, if they aren’t already.

The Site Actions section contains the following tools:

Manage Site Features— These are discussed in more detail in the section “Reviewing Site Collection and Site Features” in this chapter.

Save Site as Template— Not available for publishing sites, this tool is very useful for saving sites that have been customized for specific uses, such as for specific types of groups of users such as US Departments, EMEA Departments, Small Projects, Cross Departmental Projects, Team Blog, and so on.

Reset to Site Definition— This tool is generally only used in situations where the site or a page on the site is damaged. Using this tool will remove all customizations from a page or all pages on the site, including web part zones, custom controls, and inline text.

Delete This Site— Permanently deletes the site and all of its contents. A deleted site will not appear in the Recycle Bin of the parent site.

Site Web Analytics Reports— Provides reports of Traffic and Inventory for the site, an example of which is shown in Figure 21.20.

Site Collection Web Analytics Reports— Provides the same reports as Site Web Analytics, but for the site collection, and includes Search usage reports.
