Chapter 17. Safeguarding Confidential Data in SharePoint 2010

Protecting SharePoint data goes beyond simple backup and restore. Protection involves managing what happens to data in the event of a site outage, in the event of a major disaster, or simply what happens if someone gains unauthorized access to that data.

In today’s complex data management world, administrators are increasingly being tasked with the management of the entire lifecycle of their data, from content creation to content expiration, and the penalties for inadvertently leaking confidential data to unauthorized personnel can be substantial.

SharePoint 2010 and related database technologies using Microsoft SQL Server enable administrators to better control what happens to their data throughout its entire lifecycle. Disaster recovery and high availability of the data can be achieved through SQL database mirroring, and encryption of content in databases can be handled with SQL Transparent Data Encryption (TDE). In addition, rights protection of the content can be enabled by integration with Active Directory Rights Management Services (AD RMS).

This chapter covers these various data protection technologies related to SharePoint. With a fundamental grasp of these technologies, administrators can dramatically improve the security of their critical SharePoint data.
