Common Development Tasks

SharePoint Designer 2010 supports a variety of development tasks including but not limited to the following items:

• Extending upon the basic workflows provided out-of-the-box with SharePoint 2010. These were covered in more detail in Chapter 28, “Out-of-the-Box Workflows and Designer 2010 Workflows.”

• Although basic branding can be done with the standard UI tools in SharePoint 2010, more extensive branding in SharePoint 2010 requires SharePoint Designer 2010. The WYSYWIG editor and integrated CSS editor support extensive branding options.

• Custom ASPX and .Net pages extend the functionality of SharePoint and enable the development of custom .Net web pages within SharePoint that take advantage of powerful components such as the DataView.

• Custom forms to extend the functionality of the built-in SharePoint 2010 forms.

• Basic web parts can be developed using SharePoint Designer 2010; however, not all the features supported by Visual Studio 2010 are available.
