A Few Words About Using Interns

We see companies hire interns all the time to fill the social media role. They think that because interns are young, they must be savvy with social media.

That mentality is not well thought out. It’s like saying that kids talk all the time on mobile phones so let’s put them in charge of telecommunication companies. It’s a mismatch to assume this.

Interns and entry-level staff have their roles, and it can be part of a social media team. They can help by listening or responding to common questions. They can also pull data and create artwork. They will need a lot of direction and guidance to make sure it meets the business objectives and adheres to your brand.

WATCH OUT

We’ve heard of many cases in which inexperienced and careless staff have put major dents in a company’s reputation, either accidentally or by “going rogue” on their employer’s social media channels and offended either the public, current customers, or clients. Treat your social media marketing as you would any other aspect of your business, and make sure that you put qualified individuals in charge of it.
