An alternative way of creating the template

Another way of generating a Word template is to generate it while being on any of the entity records. Let's look at how it can be generated for an account:

  1. While on the account record form, click on More (...), | Word Templates | Create Word Template:

Check out the following screenshot to see how can selected the Word Template option:

Doing this will open a screen where you can select the relationships that are to be included in the template.

Another way for generating the word template would be from a list of records. Navigate to the view for the entity for which the user wants to generate the document template. Select one record and click on More (...) | Word Templates | Create Word Template:

Hence, we have now created a Word template. Now, let's see how to work on the generated document template. 

  1. The next step is to edit the document template. Open the document in Microsoft Office. Note that the document is completely blank:
  1. To see and add Dynamics 365 XML data, you will need to enable the Developer tab. The steps are as follows:
    1. Navigate to File | Options | Customize Ribbon and enable Developer:
    1. Click on OK, review that a new tab Developer is added on word, as follows:
    1. Click on the XML Mapping Pane. On the right-hand pane, review that a drop-down menu for selecting Custom XML Part appears. Select the XML part related to Dynamics CRM. Note that, on doing so, all of the attributes related to the entity for which the template was generated along with the relations selected start appearing, as shown in the following screenshot:

Now, you can insert custom controls in the attribute by right-clicking on Attribute | Insert Custom Control, and then selecting the custom control type. The control will govern the layout of the attribute in the template.
