Use multiple elements of similar capability and balance the load continuously across them to achieve the required throughput and response. To increase capacity, add further elements to the load-balanced set.

Both software and hardware load balancers are available. The actual load balancing tends to be across software elements, with the load balancing across hardware achieved as a consequence of the software elements running on that hardware.
