Identify information that changes infrequently compared to the frequency with which it is accessed and cache it locally to where it is used. Each of the application servers caches data that it reads from the DBMS. When this information is next required by an application component, it can be retrieved from the local cache without reference to the database.

This pattern applies to both hardware and software.
