Methodology

This process involves the following key aspects:

Scalability requirements are defined in terms of an increase in user-load that the system must be able to absorb while continuing to meet its response time and throughput objectives. Scalability requirements also include the changes to the application needed to meet these increased load levels.

The main factors that should be addressed during scalability design are as follows:

  • Business SLAs, which include the page response times, transaction and process completion time, initial load times, and others
  • Website traffic and workload, which include the average and a maximum number of users, maximum load, maximum number of transactions per second (TPS)
  • Historical data about seasonal trends is relevant for retail domain-based applications
  • The maximum user load supported by competitors and the generally accepted industry standards for response times
