Working with the Folder List

If you move between folders frequently, you might want to navigate by using a combination of the Navigation Pane and the Folder List. The Navigation Pane gives you quick access to the Outlook 2007 folders that the majority of people use most often. However, you might use different Outlook 2007 folders, or you might want to access certain file system folders from Outlook 2007. For example, suppose that you have an Exchange Server account but also use a set of personal folders to store personal messages and contacts or other data. Because Outlook 2007 doesn’t automatically add shortcuts in the Navigation Pane for your other folders, the best way to access these folders is usually through the Folder List, as shown in Figure 30-1.

Use the Folder List to move between folders not listed in the Navigation Pane or to see which folders are included in a given store.

You can display the Folder List in two ways:

  • Choose Go, Folder List.

  • Click the Folder List button at the bottom of the Navigation Pane.

The behavior of the Folder List has changed from earlier versions of Microsoft Outlook. In earlier versions (pre-Outlook 2003), the Folder List automatically hid itself after you selected a folder from it. In Outlook 2007 (and in Outlook 2003), the Folder List remains visible in the Navigation Pane until you click one of the Outlook 2007 folder buttons below the Folder List. Clicking a folder in the Folder List itself does not cause the Folder List to disappear.

Note

You can right-click a folder in the Folder List to display the folder’s shortcut menu, which gives you access to specific actions that you can perform on the folder. Many of these actions, such as opening and deleting folders, are explained in the following sections.
