Configuring Cached Exchange Mode Synchronization

In most respects, most of the remote mail features are the same regardless of the remote Exchange Server type. When you are using Outlook 2007 with Exchange Server 2007 or Exchange Server 2003 and Cached Exchange Mode, however, you can control the way Outlook 2007 downloads messages or headers without placing Outlook 2007 in offline mode. Outlook 2007 makes additional commands available from the status bar when you are working with an Exchange Server 2007 or Exchange Server 2003 account in Cached Exchange Mode. Click the Outlook 2007 icon in the status bar to access the commands shown in Figure 43-6.

Control synchronization settings for Cached Exchange Mode from the status bar.

The commands available by clicking the status bar include the following:

  • Download Full Items. Download headers, bodies, and attachments when synchronizing the local cache with the remote mailbox.

  • Download Headers And Then Full Items. Download headers first; after all headers are downloaded, begin downloading message bodies and attachments.

  • Download Headers. Download only headers without message bodies or attachments.

  • On Slow Connections Only Download Headers. If Outlook 2007 detects a slow connection, download headers only. If this option is not selected, Outlook 2007 uses the setting you specified (see the preceding three options) regardless of the connection speed.

  • Work Offline. Place Outlook 2007 in offline mode. Also choose this command when offline to place Outlook 2007 in online mode.
