Stock, Money, and Art

MONEY IN EXCHANGE FOR ART THAT IS BASED ON MONEY

How would you like to own a piece of the stock market? I’m not talking about a share in some company, but rather an actual one-of-a-kind, never-again-to-be-produced work of art based on the stock code of your choice?

Australian artist Anthony White produces just such works upon request. But once he paints a piece representing a company from a given stock exchange (such as YHOO, representing the company Yahoo!®), he will never again paint that particular symbol.

Anthony’s popular art touches on human attraction to the “unique” and the desire for ownership. His Stock Code Series is a similar in concept to his Money Series, which consists of prints of various currencies starting at one unit (e.g. $1), increasing by one unit each time he creates a painting. Again, no painting will ever be repeated. Appropriately, the price of the painting is the same as the amount depicted on the piece; for example, $1 for the $1 piece, $2 for the $2 piece, and so on. He is well into the 200 range in all the currencies currently available (the Australian dollar, the US dollar, the UK pound, and the EU euro). And here’s a bonus: Anyone who purchases art from him is welcome to stay at his studio in Yeppoon, Australia.

In his own words, he is “exploring the relationship between money and art.” —GRG
