Scanwiches

ART THAT’S GOOD ENOUGH TO EAT

What better way to preserve that delicious sandwich from the deli down the street than by scanning it and uploading it to a website? Scanwiches.com does just that, and it’s absolutely, mouthwateringly incredible.

Started by Jon Chonko, a New York City designer, Scanwiches.com has become an Internet phenomenon. Chonko uses his girlfriend’s old scanner, which has a broken lid, and just plops the sandwich down directly on the glass. He scans it, performs some minor color adjustments in Photoshop®, and then uploads the image to his site.

The stark contrast of the black background and the vibrant colors of the sandwiches make for stunning images.

The site allows you to cycle through the images, each with its own short description:

• Market Café: Turkey, Lettuce, Mustard, Mayo, Relish, Tomato, on a roll

• Alidoro: Salami, Fresh Mozzarella, Arugula on a baguette

• Deli & Salad Bar: Chicken Cutlet, Salami, Ham, Buffalo Mozzarella, Lettuce, Tomato, Mayo on a poppy seed roll

• Deli & Salad Bar: Brie, Tomatoes, Cucumber, Arugula, on a hero

Although the process seems haphazard, the results are beautiful. It’s nice to know that food doesn’t need always need a stylist to look good. —GRG
