Start by loading the layer area as a selection (CL-click
on the thumbnail in the Layers panel). Make a new layer
(CSn LSn) and set its mode to Hard Light,
checking the box Fill with Hard-Light-neutral color. Click OK,
then inverse the selection (CSi LSi) and
Delete. Finally, lock the transparency of the Hard Light layer.

Don’t just use a single color, but sample a range of colors
from around the image. Here, I’ve sampled a much darker
red, and used it to paint over the left side of the body, which
tones it down considerably.

HADING USING HARD LIGHT MODE
can have a far more cinematic effect than
shading using the Dodge and Burn tools. But if
Dodge and Burn are Nosferatu, then Hard Light
is more Saturday Night Fever: shadows can take
on a strong hue of their own. There are, of
course, more than three light modes; shown
here are some personal favorites.
Rather than painting directly onto the
layer, create a new layer and set it to Hard
Light mode. You then have the option of
filling the layer with 50% gray: this makes a
good background when applying the shading
to multiple layers. By filling your selection
area with 50% gray and then locking the
transparency, you can be sure that the light you
paint will only be applied within the area where
you want it.
I apply all my shading on a Hard Light layer
in this way, because it’s so editable and you
never damage the underlying layer.

HOT TIP
There are several
stages involved in
step 1, and it can
be irritating to
have to perform
this sequence
over and over. The
simple solution
is to perform it
just once, and
to record it as an
Action that can be
retrieved with a
single keystroke.
You can see how to
create this Action
on page 426.

Sample a color from the background – the sampled
colors are here shown in a box in the corner – and paint
on the Hard Light layer with a soft-edged brush. As you can
see, choosing a light color such as this pink produces too
bright a result; the image is overwhelmed by the color.
3
Dark colors produce better results. After sampling this
deep pink from the background, I’ve painted over the
right side of the singer’s face and arms. Already, she seems to
be blending more effectively into the background.
5
After laying down the base with dark colors, you can use
bright colors to add some accents. This gold color was
sampled from the right side of the background. But when it’s
applied at 100% opacity, as it is here, it’s far too strong and
overpowers the image.
6
We can still use a light color, but at a low brush strength.
Here, I’ve lowered the strength of the brush to just 10%,
and I’ve used it to paint some highlights on the microphone,
the sunglasses on her head, and on her shoulder. The end
result is a singer who matches the background much better.
