Choose the Liquify filter from the top of the
Filter menu. The main tool is Forward Warp w,
which smears the pixels in the direction you drag. It’s like the
Smudge tool, only it produces less smeary results.
4
Let’s try some expressions. Pushing
the eyebrows down in the middle
makes Putin look cross; dragging the
corner of the mouth down helps.
9
Raising a corner of the mouth
increases the querulous look – try
making the expression yourself.
5
We can make him look worried by
pushing both eyebrows up, one at
a time. Note how the Mask Frozen eyes
remain undistorted.
10
To complete the querulous
expression, push the other
eyebrow down in the center.
T
HE LIQUIFY FILTER IS A
powerful tool for distorting
images – far stronger than the
Smudge tool in its effects, and
much more controllable. It
has undergone a massive refit
under the hood in Photoshop
CS6, tapping directly into your
computer’s GPU (Graphics
Processing Unit). This all
means it’s very much faster
and smoother, and allows for
enormous brush sizes.
Liquify is great for caricature,
and we’ll look at that briefly
here. But for the Photoshop
artist, its main benefit is its ability
to produce subtle changes of
expression. Here, we’ll take
an official portrait of Vladimir
Putin, the Prime Minister of the
Russian Federation – not a man
given to displaying his emotions.

To help that quizzical look,
we can twist the mouth
with the Twirl Clockwise Tool c – hold
O A for anti-clockwise.
11
For a look of surprise, raise both
eyebrows in the middle, and
turn the corners of the mouth down.
7
Press the Reconstruct slider
button to revert the image,
or revert it selectively by painting over
with the Reconstruct Tool r.
8
Expressions often have multiple
components. We can begin to
make Putin look quizzical by raising one
eyebrow in the center.
12
A sense of disbelief is achieved
by bringing both eyebrows
down, and giving the mouth a twist.
13
You can use Liquify for
caricatures too, but make sure
you don’t offend anyone too powerful…
2
The larger the brush size, the more pixels are affected by
the drag. You can change brush size just as you would
elsewhere in Photoshop – using the [ ] keys, or holding
LO A-
RIGHT CLICK and dragging in the image.
3
In the last step, the eyes got distorted – it looks
all wrong. Check the box to turn on Advanced
Mode, and use the Freeze Mask Tool f to paint in the eye
area. You can hide the mask area when you’ve painted it.
HOT TIP
The main times
Liquify fails to
produce the
results you want
are where you use
the wrong brush
size. Generally,
you should use a
brush rather larger
than youd expect.
This is because
the brushes are
soft-edged, which
means their effect
is weighted more
towards the
middle than the
outside. Too large,
and you’ll simply
push a lot more
pixels than you
want. Too small is
even worse: you’ll
get a wrinkling
effect as only small
batches of pixels
are moved with
each push.
