THE FRIDAY CHALLENGE
W
E’VE LOOKED AT WAYS OF
creating a fabric effect using the
Dodge and Burn tools. But for more detailed
work, nothing beats the Smudge tool for precise
creation of folds and wrinkles.
We’ll start with an image of a woman in a
swimsuit, paint a dress shape on her, and then
go on to build up the shading in detail until we
achieve a realistic, compelling impression of a
satin dress. I’ve included the dress shape in the
version of this file on the website.
Smudge painting fabric
1
Draw the basic dress on a new
layer. It’s easiest to do this with the
Pen tool, but you can always touch it up
with the Brush afterwards.
6
Continue to use the temporary
‘Smudge Painting’ technique, using
both white and black. Make an extra
deep fold for the thumb tip to tuck into.
2
Use the Burn tool to add shading
round the edge, under the breasts
and hand. Lock the Transparency so the
Smudge tool doesn’t go over the edge.
7
Reduce the size of the Smudge tool,
and then use it to smear intricate
folds and wrinkles. It takes a while to get
a decent effect: don’t rush it!
