Spin the bottle 2
7
The bottom label presents a particular problem: it first needs to be
straightened out. Start by rotating it 90°. I tried several methods
before I hit on the Shear filter, found in Filter > Distort. This is a filter
we used to use a lot before Image Warp appeared, and it only bends
horizontally. Click to add points to the curve, and drag to reshape them.
8
With the label
straightened
out, use Image Warp
as before to bend it
around the bottle.
9
To mask the
original label,
select a band of texture
just above the label and
make a new layer from it.
15
When the
bottle is
placed on a table,
we need to add a
refracted version of
the view through it.
16
Duplicate
a piece of
background, move
above the bottle, and
change its mode to
Multiply (page 82).
17
Make a
Clipping
Mask of the bottle
layer, so the view is
only visible where it
overlaps the bottle.
18
Enter Image
Warp, and
choose the Inflate
preset to bulge the
copied view. Reduce
to 50% opacity.
19
Select the
top piece
inside the clear neck,
and reduce its scale
(theres less distortion
here).

HOT TIP
After I’d finished
the illustration I
noticed that the
bottom label didn’t
look quite right. But,
since I’d turned it
into a Smart Object
at the beginning,
I was able to use
Image Warp once
more and pick up
where I left off.
That’s the real power
of Smart Objects:
and you can read
more about them in
chapter 14.
20
Making
all the
adjustments you
need to build the
refracted view may
seem like a complex
piece of work, and
indeed it is a bit
fiddly to do. But the
result is an image
that looks very
much more like a
real photograph.
It’s worth the effort
for that extra bit of
realism.
10
Using the
original
bottle as a Clipping
Mask, stretch the
texture vertically.
11
Use Filter
> Blur >
Gaussian Blur to
soften the texture a
little.
12
Use the
Smudge
tool, at a large size,
to smear the texture
over the seal.
13
It may all
look a little
dull: use the Dodge
tool to brighten the
highlights.
14
Finally, use
the Glass
filter (in Filter > Filter
Gallery) to add a little
glass texture.
