Instant hair growth
1
Begin by making a new, empty layer in a Photoshop
document. With a small, soft brush, draw some random
squiggles like those above. It helps to vary the opacity as
you paint, for a less uniform effect – most easily done with a
graphics tablet. Then choose Define Brush Preset from the Edit
menu to make a brush from the squiggles.
6
Although it looks a little patchy at first, we can build
up the density by painting over the hair. Vary the brush
size, if you like, to add some tighter strands of hair. We don’t
need to be concerned about the shape too much, since we can
adjust that later.
5
To set the foreground and background colors, sample the
darkest and lightest parts of Obama’s hair. There’s not a
lot of variation to choose from, but we can fix this later. Start to
paint with the brush, reducing the brush size greatly to create
small, tight curls.
O
N THE PREVIOUS PAGES WE
removed some of Barack Obama’s hair.
Now, to redress the balance, let’s try adding a
little more facial hair instead.
The technique involves creating a custom
brush to do the deed for us. Making your own
brushes in Photoshop can be a tricky affair: this
relatively simple example will give you an idea
of how it’s done, so you can go on to create
your own brushes later.
It’s easy to see why so few politicians have
beards.

Switch to the Shape Dynamics
section and set both the Size and
Angle Jitter to 100%. This will make each
brush stroke rotate and scale randomly
as you paint with it, as the preview at
the bottom now shows.
2
Open the Brush Presets panel, and
our newly created brush appears
right at the bottom. As the preview
shows, at present it’s set to paint a
steady stream; we’ll change this in the
following steps.
HOT TIP
If you have a
graphics tablet
(and you really
should, you know)
then you can
make the whole
operation more
controllable. In the
Size Jitter section,
for instance,
you can add pen
pressure control;
in the Other
Dynamics section,
you can add
pressure control to
the opacity of the
brush as well.
4
Now change to the Color Dynamics
section, and set the Foreground/
Background Jitter to 100% as well. This
will bring variation into the color of the
brush, which will help it to match the
hair in the photograph.
7
The colors weren’t quite right, but it’s easy enough to fix
this: use Curves or Levels to take out some red and add
a little blue to get darker, stronger hair. It’s now a good match
for the hair on his head.
8
We can create a layer mask to paint out unwanted hair
areas, allowing us to style it as we choose. A soft brush
will create a soft, unnatural edge, though; try using the hair-
shaped brush itself on the mask to paint some edges back in
after hiding the bulk of the hair.
