HOT TIP
The effect you
get with the
stepped Curves
varies from image
to image. After
you’ve applied the
Curves, try using
the Dodge and
Burn tools on areas
of the underlying
image that don’t
look right, to effect
subtle changes
of tone. But bear
in mind they will
operate in a very
unpredictable
way!
2
Click about a quarter of the way along the straight line,
and drag upwards. A new anchor point will be created
where you click. The pig will now appear far too bright, but
that’s OK.
5
Click a little further, and drag down. Now, the pig gets
dark again – but you can see how it’s starting to take on a
deep, shiny look.
8
To smooth the metal effect, lock the transparency of the
pig layer and apply 1 to 2 pixels of Gaussian Blur. Some
areas, such as the eyes, will look wrong; paint in black on the
Adjustment Layer’s mask to hide the effect in those areas.
9
Finally, let’s bring that color back into the pig. Move
the original pig layer above the Adjustment Layer, and
change its mode from Normal to Color. Now, the pig is both
pink and very metallic-looking.
3
Click a little further along the curve, to create a second
anchor point, and drag this one down to make this bump.
Now, the pig will turn very dark.
6
Click twice more on the curve, dragging one point up and
the next one down, to make this stepping effect. Now,
the pig is truly shiny.
