Duplicate the bottom of the stand
to make the left half. The upper
part needs to be redrawn, matching the
tones of the original.

This photograph of a room has
strong verticals and geometric
shapes: it’s the ideal image to make our
reflection.
1
Start by slicing the screen in half,
curving over at the top. The stand
can also be cut half way along, on the
right half.
11
Lowering the opacity of this
layer allows us to see the
computer through it – and changing the
mode to Hard Light adds strength.
A refracting glass case
T
HIS ILLUSTRATION WAS
commissioned by a magazine to
accompany a feature about art buying online.
The idea was to split an iMac down the middle
and place it in a formaldehyde-filled case, in
the style of British artist Damien Hirst.
It’s a tricky project, as slicing the computer
in half takes a fair amount of time and fiddling;
but the end result is an attractive image. The
original iMac photo I used is shown below.
7
Draw the face as a frame with
a square hole cut out of it, then
distort using Free Transform to match
the perspective of the guides.
6
I used the Pen tool to draw the
outline of the case as several
separate paths. This is just for a visual
guide, for placing the sides later.

3
Draw the interior in gray on a new
layer (left), then duplicate a smaller
version and fill with darker gray (right)
to make the interior.
13
Reducing the opacity of the
reflection layer to just 10%
makes it work well: it’s barely visible, but
it makes the glass more tangible.
4
Add any pictures of circuit boards,
using the smaller interior layer as a
clipping mask; paint a couple of stripes
to make the back of the screen.
14
A copy of the iMac, reduced
and slid left, is an easy way to
make a reflection in the left of the glass.
The opacity is also reduced here.
5
Cut the keyboard in half, following
the contours of the keys; then draw
the interior of the keyboard as seen on
the left side.
15
Take a Merged Copy of the
side window, and paste it on
top, using the side as a Clipping Mask;
enlarge it to make the refracted view.
HOT TIP
For greater
realism, I could
have enlarged
the rear of the
case (in step 9) to
create the effect of
refraction through
the front of the
glass. But this just
looked awkward;
sometimes you
have to ignore
reality in order to
create a stronger
image.
8
The same frame can be duplicated
to make the side, using Free
Transform once more to squeeze it into
the correct shape.
9
Duplicate the face and side to
make the back and the other side
– it’s easy to use Free Transform to make
them fit in perspective.
10
Make a new layer behind the
front face, and fill with green –
this will form the ‘liquid’ inside the case.
