Use Free Transform to distort to fit
the face. Follow the angle of the
face to get the shape right.
7
Load the glasses as a selection,
then nudge the selection down
and left a few pixels; fill with white, then
delete the glasses area, leaving a rim.
11
Use a Curves Adjustment Layer,
using the frame Group as a
Clipping Mask, to get a shiny effect (see
page 284).
1
Begin by drawing half an eyeglass
shape, and fill it with mid gray;
then duplicate to make the other half.
6
When you reduce the opacity of
the reflection (I’ve used 30%) you
can see the new eyes through it, and the
refraction becomes more clear.
10
Draw all the elements of the
frame on new layers, adding a
little shading using the Dodge and Burn
tools. Make the layers into a Group.
A
DDING GLASSES TO THIS WOMAN
was set as a Friday Challenge on
the HotChiPs website. The awkward angle
added to the difficulty. You may never need
to add glasses to a face, of course, but it’s an
interesting exercise that combines a wide range
of techniques.
One thing every Friday Challenge entrant
missed out was step 4 – the refraction seen
through the lens. A small thing, but it makes a
lot of difference to the result. The eyes may
appear a little low in the frames, but that’s
because we’re viewing the face from below.

Add a Layer Mask to the glasses to
allow for the nose to stick in front
of them.
8
Take another copy of the eyes and
place it over the rim, moving it
slightly and brightening it to make the
edge of the lenses.
12
Duplicate the frame and
glasses layers, and fill them
with black. Reduce the opacity of the
glasses copy to about 50%.
4
Place a copy of the original eyes
and above the glasses, using them
as a Clipping Mask; enlarge it a little.
9
Repeat the process to make the
inside upper edge of the lenses,
as seen through the glass. Brighten this
area a little.
13
Put all the shadow elements
into a group, and apply a little
Gaussian Blur to them; reduce the
opacity of the whole group to soften it.
5
Add a suitable reflection – I’ve used
a piece of London skyline – using
the glasses as a Clipping Mask.
14
Add a Layer Mask to the frame
group and paint it out where it
disappears into the hair. Bring a couple
of strands of hair in front.

HOT TIP
Turn the glasses
into a Smart
Object before
distorting in
step 2, so you
can amend it
later if you need
to. Getting the
angle right here is
critical to making
the whole image
work.
