Use Free Transform to distort to fit
the face. Follow the angle of the
face to get the shape right.

Load the glasses as a selection,
then nudge the selection down
and left a few pixels; fill with white, then
delete the glasses area, leaving a rim.

Use a Curves Adjustment Layer,
using the frame Group as a
Clipping Mask, to get a shiny effect (see
page 284).
1
Begin by drawing half an eyeglass
shape, and fill it with mid gray;
then duplicate to make the other half.

When you reduce the opacity of
the reflection (I’ve used 30%) you
can see the new eyes through it, and the
refraction becomes more clear.
10
Draw all the elements of the
frame on new layers, adding a
little shading using the Dodge and Burn
tools. Make the layers into a Group.
A
DDING GLASSES TO THIS WOMAN
was set as a Friday Challenge on
the HotChiPs website. The awkward angle
added to the difficulty. You may never need
to add glasses to a face, of course, but it’s an
interesting exercise that combines a wide range
of techniques.
One thing every Friday Challenge entrant
missed out was step 4 – the refraction seen
through the lens. A small thing, but it makes a
lot of difference to the result. The eyes may
appear a little low in the frames, but that’s
because we’re viewing the face from below.
